  1. Before the dwarfs and Bilbo entered Mirkwood, what were Gandalf's final cautionary words as he bade farewell to them?
  2. What connections can you find between The Hobbit and other texts so far... Are there any authors out there that you think may have taken inspriration and ideas from the Hobbit?  Who are they and what books have they written that contain similarities? (for instance: Bilbo's mother was called Belladonna Took...Wizards, Spiders, skin changers...quests...etc. etc. etc...)
  3. How has Bilbo's character changed so far in the story?
  4. So far, what are your thoughts and feelings on the novel?
  5. Would you recommend this novel?  Who would it be suitable for?  How would you rate it (develop your own rating scale and explain it.)

  2. 1. Gandalf told them to not drink out of the black stream and not to stray from the path.
    2. I think the book in a way resembles The Wretched Stone because the forest has no food to eat like the island with the stone on it.
    3. Bilbo has changed because he used to be a quiet stay-at-home kind of guy, but now he is much more courageous and adventurous.
    4. I really like this novel. I think it is extremely entertaining and over-all a great book.
    5. I would defiantly recommend this novel. I think it would be suitable for ages 7-8+ because there may be words they don’t understand. My rating scale would be the happier the smiley the better the book.(  Great book  Okay book  Bad book) I would give it a  face.

  3. 1) Gandalf’s final cautionary words as he bade farewell were NEVER stray off the path and don’t drink or bathe in the river.
    2) There are connections from harry potter because the forbidden forest had bad creatures and nothing to eat in it and the wretched stone had no food and if you did find food it would taste horrible I don’t think any authors got and ideas from the hobbit.
    3) I think Bilbo’s character has changed because he’s gotten braver and he is more reliable now.
    4) I think it is a really good book and it has a lot of mysteries in it and it is always exciting to read it.
    5) I would recommend this book I think It is suitable for grade 4 and up I think it is a 15/20 stars on a rating scale.

Do not leave the main trail.

    The wretched stone.
    3. How has Bilbo's character changed so far in the story?
    He has gotten more courageous.
    4. So far, what are your thoughts and feelings on the novel?
My currents thought is that they should have stayed on the trail or left Bomber with a few other dwarfs because they had to carry Bomber for awhile then sent the rest of them to investigate the lights and when the lights went out, come back to the trail. If you can’t find the trail with the others then you could play a game of life and death marco polo.
    5. Would you recommend this novel? Who would it be suitable for? How would you rate it (develop your own rating scale and explain it.)

I would recommend this novel. I think it would be suited for grade 4+ because younger children may not understand what is going on at times. My rating scale is: The happier the happy face the better.

  5. 1.I think Gandalf said: don’t drink from the stream and don’t leave the path.
2.A connection I have to another text is: Mirkwood is like the forbidden forest in Harry Potter written by JK Rowling, another similarity also to Harry Potter is the large spiders which are like Aragog, Hagrids friend.
3.I think Bilbo has changed because at the beginning of the book he was quiet and he liked to keep to himself and stay in his hobbit hole but now he is much more daring and bold and the dwarfs have a lot of respect for him now.
4.My thoughts and feelings about the novel are: I really like it, I think it has a lot of adventure and some humor and I can’t wait to see how it ends.
5.I would recommend this novel to kids and adults because it’s one of those books that everybody will like I give it 9 out of 15 stars.

  6. 1. I think Gandalf said to stay on the path and not go off the path or if you do you will get really lost.
    2. I found a connection in a book I was reading. It was like a journey and Bilbo in the Hobbit is also going on a journey.
    3. I think Bilbo has gotten a lot more brave and more helpful too.
    4. I really like the novel but I don’t like the part that Bilbo was fighting the spiders.
    5. I would recommend it for 8-12 year old kids. I would rate it so far 8 out of ten.

  7. 1. Gandalf’s final words to Bilbo and the dwarfs were to stay on the path and if you didn’t you would be lost and never make it out.
    2. The connections that I have are of the Forbidden Forest in Harry Potter, therefore I think J.K. Rowling has read the book. Also, another reason that she might have read the book is because in Harry Potter there were giant spiders in the forest just like in The Hobbit.
    3. Bilbo’s character has changed because at the beginning it seemed like he would never go on any journey away from his hobbit hole and in the part we are reading now, Bilbo is pretty adventurous, though he still does miss his home.
    4. I didn’t really like this book in the start, but now I enjoy it.
    5. I would recommend this book and I think it would be suitable for a person who loves adventure books. I think overall out of 100 I would give it a 85.

  8. 1. I think the last words Gandalf said were stay on the path.
    2. In harry potter there was a forbidden forest which is kind of like Merkwood.
    3. Bilbo has changed from a little Stay-At-Home hobbit to a brave adventurous and courage’s and bold Hobbit.
    4. Evan though Bilbo and the dwarfs are courage’s I think that they are still scared.
    5. If I were to rate this novel out of 5 stars I would rate it a 4 and a half stars. And I would recommend this book for all ages.

  10. 1)Before the dwarfs and Bilbo entered Mirkwood, Gandalf's final cautionary words as he bade farewell to them were stick to the path and stick together!!
2)My text to text connection is harry potter were the spiders are chasing them through the woods.
3)He is better at going outside.
4)They think they are going to die from starvation and is they don’t tell the king.
5)I would recommend this novel because I think it is a very good book. I think my sister would like this book because it is an adventure book I would rate this book 98%/100%.

  11. 1. Gandalf’s final word to Bilbo and the dwarfs were, “Do not wonder of the path or else you will be lost in the woods.”
    2. My text to text connection is when Bilbo was fighting the giant spiders it reminded me about the series Harry Potter. JK Rowling is the author of the Harry Potter and I think she’s read this book. When Hagrid went into the woods to see the spider with Harry.
    3. Bilbo’s character has changed from being a lonely hobbit sitting in his hole to becoming a warrior. Bilbo has grown more confident, braver and stronger since he’s left to go on this journey.
    4. This novel has interesting characters and adventures. It gives you some confidence to read more of these interesting novels.
    5. I would recommend this novel for 9 stars out of 10 because it wants you to read the book more and more. I would recommend this book to people who love the Harry Potter series and to people who like adventure in the books they read. Martin

  12. 1. Gandalf's told them to not drink out of the black stream and not to go off the path.
    2. The connections I have to the Hobbit were to harry potter. There is giant spiders in harry potter and a forest like the forest of Mirkwood . There is a character in harry potter named bellatrix lastrang.
    3. He has changed by becoming more brave and heroic because of the ring.
    4. The novel is good but it was very hard to get into.
    5. I would recommend this novel for 10+. It is rated in my a pinyin a  out of  and .jake

  13. Gandalf’s last words of warning were “NEVER STRAY OFF THE PATH IF YOU DO YOU SHALL NEVER FIND YOUR WAY BACK”

The connections I have found so far are mainly with Harry Potter with Aragog and the giant spiders. Also the Forbidden Forest in Harry Potter could be based on Mirkwood.
Bilbo has changed in 2 main ways. First of all he is less whiny; and next he is MUCH more courageous.

So far I think this is a wonderful book I think that Bilbo will learn a bit more about the Dwarves and most of all himself.

For my rating scale I will use a number system
4 means the book is excellent
3 means the book is quite good
3- means the book is good
2 means the book is OK
1 means the book is bad
0 means the book is horrible
    I would give The Hobbit a 4.

  15. 1.“Do not for any reason stray off the path and stick together.”
2.I think that J.K. Rowling used the idea of the giant spiders as Aragog and his family, and maybe Mirkwood is like the Forbidden Forest for the books of Harry Potter.
3.Bilbo’s character has changed ways such as: his bravery level has gone up; he has started to take pride in this journey, and actually cares for the dwarfs. He is using his knowledge to help him through this journey.
4.So far my thoughts and feelings about The Hobbit are: It is an exciting and grasping novel. I didn’t like the story for the first couple chapters, (it was a little confusing) but I like it now that we have gotten farther into the story.
5.I would recommend this book for people who like a good adventure, and I think that if they like Harry Potter then they would probably like The Hobbit. If I had to make a rating scale I would give the book 9 pages out of 10. My rating scale is for books and you rate the book out of 10. You are rating a book, so I used pages to create my rating scale. I think the people suitable for The Hobbit would be grade 5 and up. ~*Catherine*~

  16. 1. Gandalf’s final words were do not for any reason leave the path.
    2. I have a connection to Harry Potter. There are large spiders in the forbidden forest and nothing but the centaurs can be trusted. Also I have a connection to Skybreaker. There was no sort of activity on the hyperion until John Wrath boarded. Like when there wasn’t any problems in the forest till the elves had their feast.
    3. Bilbo has changed to see the adventure side of him. I predict at the end he wants to go on another adventure and be more prepared.
    4. I love this book it is exactly what I like. It is adventurous and has lots of action. I am over exited to hear the ending.
    5. I highly recommend this book to kids from grade 3 to fully grown grandparents. I would not recommend It for kids under grade 3 because it has an ok amount of violence. I would give a 4 and a half stars out of 5.

    3. Bilbo’s character has changed so far in the story by he never wanted to go outside or go on journeys away from his house.
    4. My thoughts and feelings about the novel are it’s a really good book and it has lots of adventures and mysteries.
    5. I would recommend this book a lot, it would be suitable for ages 6+, I would rate it a four out of five because it took a bit to get into but a very good book.

    3. Bilbo's character has changed very much in the story. He went from very weak to a strong, courageous Hobbit.
    4. So far, my thoughts and feelings on the novel are… It is a very interesting and page turning novel.

  23. 1. Gandalf's final cautionary words as he bade farewell to them were don’t go off the path, you will never find it again.
    2. I think the author of harry potter read the book “the hobbit” because there is giant spiders in harry potter and when they were in Mirkwood they met giant spiders.
    3. Bilbo's character has changed so far in the story because at the beginning the hobbit was very shy and now he is very confident with himself.
    4. My thoughts and feelings on this novel are…
    • It is a very good book
    • Lots of adventure
    • Many characters

  24. 1. Gandalf’s cautionary words were to stick to the path and don’t go wandering off on your own and the goblins won’t suspect that’s the way you are going to take.
    2. Some connections I can make to other texts would be the books that are called: Harry Potter and Messenger. I think J.K. Rowling (author of Harry Potter) had been inspired when Bilbo was attacking the spiders so that’s how she came up with Aragog. Lois Lowry (author of Messenger) had really focused on the forest, Mirkwood because in the forest there was barely any food and in Messenger the forest didn’t supply any food at all.
    3. Bilbo has changed quite a bit because at the beginning he almost always thought of his Hobbit hole, but now he is very brave and the dwarves count on him to be there when they need him most.
    4. The book is very exciting but it is very hard to get used to when you start from the beginning.
    5. On a scale of 100%, I would rate it a 89% out of 100% because we are not completely through it but hopefully it will end up100% in the end.

  25. 1. His last words were don’t waist the water or food.
    2. There is a book called the lightning thief that has centars and mystical creachers and the authors name is Rick Riordan.
    3. Bilbo changed a lot because he used to just want to sit in his little Hobbit hole and now he is very brave.
    4. I think it is a really good book because it has a lot of cool stuff like minters and goblins.
    5. I think is a really good book and some of my relatives would really like it to so I rate it 10 out of 10.

  26. 1. Before the dwarfs and Bilbo entered Mirkwood, Gandalf final were:” don’t wonder off the path keep faith and hope” and “goodbye”
    2. J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter books with her giant spider.
    3. He has become less whiny and more helpful.
    4. Personally I’m not a fan of fantasy books. Ever since I was 7 I haven’t liked them. The hobbit reminds me of one those movies were some knight goes to save a princess from a tower where there’s a fire breathing dragon.
    5. I would only recommend this book if you are a fan of fantasy books. Don’t bother if you’re not, I mean you could I’m suggesting you might not like it. This my rating scale an arrow up means this book is amazing, an arrow left means good but not the best, an arrow right means it’s ok and an arrow down means this is horrible. I give the hobbit an arrow right. ( i had a picture i don't no where it went.)

  27. 1. Gandalf’s cautionary words were to stay on the path, and stay alive.
    2. My connections to the book are that in The Wretched Stone is that there is not much edible food in the forest.
    3. Bilbo’s character has developed for the story because he used to be a coward and now he is brave.
    4. This is one of my favourite novels, I love it so much I bought Lord of the Rings book 1!
    5. I highly recommend this book for adults mostly because it is long and can be hard to understand. I give it an 11. My system is out of twelve.
