Giver Post #3

Choose one of the following questions to answer. Use your copy of the GIVER to help you find evidence for your answer. You must include a quote from the book that helps explain your answer.
  • Why does the Giver say that making choices would be frightening for people? (pp 98, 112, 113)
  • Why is The Receiver forbidden to share books or memories with other people in the community? (pp 74, 101-104)
  • Think about the set of rules the Giver has to live by. Think about the pleasant and painful memories he contains. Overall do you think the Giver is happy with his life?  Is  he happy with sameness?  Why? (pp 101-107)
Copy the question into MS Word. Answer below the question using the Golden Rules. Proof read it using WORD TALK. 5 sentences minimum (JM!) When you have saved the best copy, then copy and paste it into the comments below.

  1. I choose question number 2. I looked on page 102 and found this quote. The giver nodded.”I wasn’t permitted to share the books with my spouse, that’s correct. And there are other difficulties, too. You remember the rule that says the new Receiver can’t talk about his training?”Jonas nodded. Of course he remembered. It turned out, by far, to be the most frustrating of the rules he was required to obey. Jonas was forbidden to share the books with people because one of the most important rules on his list of rule was he cannot share any of his training with other people but The Giver. Carly

  2. The Giver says that making choices would be frightening for people because they could make the wrong choice and make everything change and the giver doesn’t want everything to change. The giver wants everyone to see the same colors and objects because he wants then to be the same as each other.

  3. Why is The Receiver forbidden to share books or memories with other people in the community?

I think that the receiver is forbidden to share books because the committee of elders thinks that they will frighten people.

  4. Question 2
    • Why is The Receiver forbidden to share books or memories with other people in the community? (pp 74, 101-104)
I think the Giver had said to Jonas “No here in the being where the memories” and I think that must mean that the receiver is not allowed to share that type of information like books and memories to the community he has to keep it to his self. Simmy.

  5. I have chosen to answer the following question, “why does the Giver say that making choices would be frightening for people?” (pp 98, 112, 113)
Because they may make the wrong choices, as the giver says in his words like this, “He might make the wrong choices.” The giver says “It’s safer.” But I think that everyone should make mistakes once in a while, because then they can learn from it. It may frighten people also because, it’s like the pilot. If people made their own choices then what if there were planes flying over head often? They would eventually get used to it, but then when a real enemy plane flies over head, they are unprepared and get attacked. This would leave them extremely frightened in the process.

  6. Question #3: I don’t think the giver is happy with all of his life. I think the giver probably feels lonesome sometimes when he can’t share what he did today, or tell them about colours and books. I don’t think the giver is happy with sameness. He probably thinks that we should have colour and creatures and that making at least some of our choices would be better than all of our choices made for us, like what colour clothing you where and I think he would like us to all look unique in our own ways. He probably thinks some of the memories of the past because the whole town would be able to experience the happy memories, and even if they had to feel pain, at least one person wouldn’t have to take all the painful memories. But the giver knows that won’t happen, and if it does it won’t happen for a long time. Catherine

No I don’t because in the book after Jonas asks him if the elders call upon him regularly the giver replies: “Rarely….Sometimes I wish they’d ask for my wisdom more often-there are so many things that I could tell them; things I wish they would change. Life here is so orderly, so predictable-so painless. It’s what they’ve chosen.

  8. The giver probably says that making choices would be frightening because he has so many frightening memories. He also thinks it’s not important for other people to have memories for themselves.

  9. Question #1. It would be scary if they made the wrong choices. “I know it’s not important, what you wear. It doesn’t matter. But.” “Not safe” is what the giver says. People I think are scared of making the wrong choices because they could ruin the community. Branden

  10. Q#3
I think the giver is happy with his life because even thought all memories are going away he still has some of them. I don’t think the giver is happy with sameness because it would be boring doing the SAME thing every day I think the giver would like it better if there was no sameness.

  11. 1) You might make the wrong choice. “Not safe?” The Giver suggested. I think it is might be freighting because they’ve never made their own choices before. My connection is: we don’t choose who is in the senate, although we choose almost everything else. Anika

  12. When you become the official receiver, when you’re finished here. Jonas is getting closer and closer to becoming the new receiver. When Jonas becomes the receiver he will be given a whole new set of rules to obey. Jonas when he has a family he cannot share any of his with his family. Jonas will have to keep a whole other life is not to speak of. Halle

  14. The Giver said that making choices would be frightening for people, because if you made the wrong choice then it would be scary or frightening as the giver says it also would not be very safe for people to be going around making their own choices, because what if they make the wrong one and it effects there whole life.

  15. Why does the Giver say that making choices would be frightening for people? I think he said that because if they pick thing them self they could regret it all their life. Here is a quote from the book,” What if they were allowed to choose their own mate? And chose wrong?”If they made choices it could be life threatening. If they made their own choices they would have no use for climate control and the Elder council. The giver is right and wrong with choices you can pick out your own clothes, food, jobs, school, mate, name of kid and if you would like to have a kid. Jake

  16. • Why is The Receiver forbidden to share books or memories with other people in the community? (pp 74, 101-104)

I think the “Giver” isn’t allowed to give people memories or share books are because that the books contain what the world was before “sameness.” I also think that the giver isn’t allowed to give memories to people because of the pain and that the community doesn’t want to feel the pain.

  17. I think the receiver is forbidden to share books or memories with other people in the community because the books may have something special that none of the people in the community are allowed to see. I think the receiver is forbidden to share memories with other people in the community is because some of the memories are painful like a sunburn. One of the sentences said volumes that each household contained: a dictionary, and the thick community volume which contained descriptions of every office, factory, building, and committee. And the Book of Rules, of course. I also think the giver wants to keep lots of the memories and feel special that he has a lot of the memories in the community.

  18. Q#1: I think it would be frightening for people to make their own choices because they could make the wrong choice. “We don’t dare let people make choices of their own.” said Jonas. “Not safe?” The Giver suggested. “Definitely not safe” said Jonas with certainty. “What if they were allowed to chose their own mate? And chose wrong?”

  21. Q#2 The Receiver is forbidden to share books or memories with other people in the community because when everyone had access to memories everyone suffered for a long time. “Jonas had not yet opened any of the books. But he read the titles here and there, and knew that they contained all of the knowledge of centuries, and that one day they would belong to him.

  23. 1. The Giver says making choices may be frightening to people because they rely on the elders in their community so they think that any decision they make will be wrong.
The receiver is forbidden to give any information of memories or books to the community because of sameness. They think that by sharing memories the sameness goes away.
The Giver is not happy with his life, he thinks the rules he lives by are awful. He is sick of sameness, and would like to rid the community of it. He knew the plan before he met Jonas.
