When you look at characters in a book, you often make a choice about which type of character they are: Protagonists or Antagonists. Protagonists are characters that help solve the problem in the story. If the character causes a lot of problems, they are the antagonists.
- Is Smaug a protagonist or an antogonist in your opinion? Why? Give some evidence that you have heard from the story that supports your point of view.
- You can usually tell whether a character is a protagonist or an antagonist by looking at their traits or personality characteristics. List 3 Characteristics or Traits of Smaug and then give 2 pieces of evidence (quotes or a paraphrase) to support each of the 3 personality traits you think fit Smaug's personality. You can go from your memory from listening to me read at lunchtime, or from this online summary of Chapter 12 (When Bilbo meets Smaug in the Lonely Mountain).

1) I think Smaug in an antagonist because he tries to prevent Thorin and company from getting their treasure, and he isn’t very friendly to Bilbo.

-he doesn’t let Thorin and company take even a small portion of the treasure
Mean -Smaug is mean because he is very rude to Bilbo and the dwarfs
- also traps them in the mountain because they tried to take the treasure that is rightfully theirs
Sneaky -Smaug is sneaky because when he is talking to Bilbo he tries to trick him with riddles
- he is sneaky because he traps the dwarfs and Bilbo when they least expect it.

1. I think Smaug is an antagonist in my opinion because he stole the dwarfs treasure so he is kind of a criminal, even though he is a lizard that’s no reason. He also destroyed the dwarf’s village.
ReplyDelete2. 3 traits or personalities I think Smaug has are aggressive, mean and crafty because he had one little cup stolen out of his big hoard so he totally flipped out and burned the mountain for one little cup, and he tried to beat Bilbo in a riddle competition.

He wanted to keep all the treasure to himself so no one else could be as wealthy as him.
Aggressive I think Smaug Is aggressive because he went to the town of Dale and destroyed it.
He destroyed lake town because they helped Bilbo and the dwarfs find the cave were smog slept.
Crafty I think he is crafty because he tried to attract Bilbo with dragon speech so he could eat Bilbo.
He crept up on the lake town without making a sound and then he got killed by Bard.

1. In my opinion Smaug is an antagonist because he causes lots of problems for Bilbo and the dwarfs. Some evidence is that when Bilbo stole one tiny cup Smaug trapped them and shot fire at them.
ReplyDelete2. 3 traits or characteristics of Smaug are: aggressive, crafty, and moody. I figure this because he awoke and saw a cup was missing (as stated before) and shook the mountain because of it. Also because, Smaug was infuriated after a small remark.
