Chapter Six: Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire

  1. How might you use the power of the golden ring if you possessed it?
  2. Explain the significance of the title of this chapter.
  3. Why would the ring not protect Bilbo from the wolves (Wargs)?
  4. Who helped Bilbo escape into the tree?
  5. Create your own character for The Hobbit and discuss what they would look like.
    • What sort of personality or character would they have - how would they behave? (You can use the Character Traits sheet here to look up words that tell about someone's character).
    • What quirks would they have (remember Bilbo is always hungry and quite whiny when he doesn't get his own way).
    • How would you include your character in the story - what role would they play?
Some readers might have already noticed the dearth of female characters in the novel. (Look up "dearth" if you do not know what it means!)

  1. 1. I would use the golden ring for the following: Surprise my brother, to sneak around my house, for track and field.
    2. It is meaning he was saved from being eaten, but his rescuers did not want him.
    3. The ring would not protect him because the wolves had a strong cent so he would not have to be seen to be captured
    4. The eagles saved Bilbo and took him to their nest.
    5. My characters name would be borey he is a dwarf. He is one of the most respected dwarfs because he is thoren’s child. He wears a blue robe with green designs of the ancient dwarf country, and it also has golden buttons. He is an aggressive dwarf he carries a sword on the left side hip he also wears a mask with his long beard hanging out from his mask. His mask is a helmet with a face shield. He battles creatures, and the goblins. He comes from a peaceful home. Branden

  2. 1) I would use the power of the golden ring to get away from danger if I was ever in danger.
2)He was captured by the goblins which was the frying pan and then he escaped and he went into the fire which was him hiding in the trees.
3)Because the book said that in daylight you can see the person wearing the ring
4)One of the dwarfs helped Bilbo get into the tree.
5)My character’s name would be Gabler. He has brown hair he is tall and skinny and he has glasses. Gabler is shy, clever and determined. Gabler would behave well because even though he’s shy with his friends he’s is always happy. He can get into argues when he’s hungry but he’s okay if he doesn’t get his way. I think Gabler would be Gandalf’s assistant and he would help out with the dwarfs. Carly

  3. 1.I would not use the ring. It would be nice to be invisible sometimes but it would seem a bit weird.
2.Out of the frying pan and into the fire means that Bilbo thinks the worst part is over but is very literally caught in a fire.
3.Because the Wargs cannot see you to know that your there they can smell you.
4.Dory helped Bilbo up into the tree
5.My Character would be a Female Elf who didn’t like singing.
She would be determined, Stubborn, ambitious, and resourceful.
One of her quirks would be that when she got scared (which wouldn’t be often) she would go mute and start shacking like mad and wouldn’t stop until she was 110% sure that they were out of the situation . But luckily she is only scared of Wargs. She would be traveling with the dwarves and Bilbo.

  4. 1.I would use the golden ring to help myself with any trouble I get into like when someone keeps hitting me I would turn invisible and they wouldn’t see me and I would escape.
2.The title really makes the chapter more interesting, but it also doesn’t make any sense. But I guess I can see how this can make sense because Bilbo gets out of the caves with his friends then ends up climbing up a tree so the caves the frying pan and when they get outside there’s a fire when the wolves come. So when they get out is when they get into the fire.
3.The ring would not protect Bilbo from the wolves/wargs because wolfs can smell Bilbo instead of looking at him so he had to climb the tree fast.
4.A dwarf helped Bilbo climb up the tree. Bilbo climbed on the dwarfs back.
5.My character would be called Kazzoom and would have a small, skinny neck, harry arms; it would have the face of a lion and would have lots of strength. He would wear a Viking helmet, and have a shinny magnificent sword. Martin

  5. 1. I don’t have much use for the ring if I were to posses it.
    2. They were all ready in a bad place and now they are in an even worse one.
    3. Because they can smell him.
    4. One of the dwarfs.
    5. My character would be a homunculus (an either 12” tall or artificially created person. In my case, an artificially created and 12” tall human.) Named Gluttony because he literally has an endless stomach. If he were to devour you then if you tried to escape you would be running forever. He is always hungry and in a sense a little clumsy. If he were to be in the story then I think the roll he would play would be one of the dragons’ guards or servants. He would be a little chubby and kind of pale-ish skin.

  6. 1. First of all, I wouldn’t use the ring at all. I don’t want magic, I only want to be normal. I am scared of all the chaos I could cause using the ring. I am also convinced the ring is evil.
    2. I think that the significance of the name of the chapter is that it tells that it started bad, now it will get worse.
    3. I think Bilbo couldn’t be protected by the wargs because the ring is evil. The wargs can smell you out and kill you, if the ring was good, it might make you invincible to that
    4. Dory got Bilbo in the tree.
    5. My character would be Lord DeathKnower, the destroyer of the ring. He would be mysterious and wise, as well as bitter ruthless. He was originally there when the ring was created and he knew its power, so ever since he was trying to destroy it. His true form is a giant blue eye, but he usually appears as a knight or occasionally a warg. His major quirk is getting angry when something isn’t perfect. If he is really angry, he will turn into a giant thundercloud hand.

  7. 1. How might you use the power of the golden ring if you possessed it?
I would put it in the shoe box under my bed in the centre of the birds nest.
    2. Explain the significance of the title of this chapter.
The “frying pan” is Gollum’s cave and when Bilbo got out he met up with the dwarfs and Gandalf then they were chased up a tree by the Wargs that is the “fire”.
    3. Why would the ring not protect Bilbo from the wolves (Wargs)?
Because the Wargs could still smell him, even if they couldn’t see him, then attack him.
    4. Who helped Bilbo escape into the tree?
    One of the dwarfs.
    5. Create your own character for The Hobbit and discuss what they would look like.
His name is Selim. He is a homunculus (12 inch tall, artificially created human). He wears a white, long sleeved shirt under a black sweater vest and wears beige shorts. He has short black hair with three little spikes and one big spike on the front.
    • What sort of personality or character would they have - how would they behave? (You can use the Character Traits sheet here to look up words that tell about someone's character). He is arrogant, quick-tempered, and pleasant (at times).
    • What quirks would they have (remember Bilbo is always hungry and quite whiny when he doesn't get his own way). He doesn’t have a real soul; he is pretty much just a container for a huge, black shadow “guardian” that has many giant eyes and mouths all over it that has little hand-like tentacles that can electrocute you. Selim has the secret identity of “Pride”. Selim can create sort of a special mouth on the shadow in him and when that mouth consumes a living being (for example a deer) then Pride gets the abilities of that being. Also Pride has a philosophers stone in his core so if he gets hurt then he can heal himself. (Does that count?)
    • How would you include your character in the story - what role would they play? Selim is a spy for the dragon and was sent to stop the dwarfs, Gandalf, and Bilbo from getting to the treasure.

  8. I might use the power of the golden ring if I possessed it would be if I was in danger.
The significance of the title of this chapter is that they just got out of danger and they got to hide
The ring would not protect Bilbo because the wolves (wargs) smelled where they were.
A Dwarf helped Bilbo escape into the trees
If I were to create my own character he would be a elf and his name would be jumbo and he would have a candy cane as a sword and he has armor and he has fluffy shoes and hes chubby and he has a beard and he would be crazy. Jadenn

  9. 1. I would play hide and go seek and I would never lose and I would also trick people into thinking I was a ghost.
    2. The significance of the title is that like getting out of the frying pan is like getting out of the mountains and into the fire is getting into more trouble with the wolfs.
    3. The ring did not protect Bilbo from the wolfs because they could smell really good and could find Bilbo.
    4. The person who helped Bilbo get in the tree is the dwarf who always carries Bilbo around.
    5. If I could create a Hobbit I would look a little bit like Bilbo I would have a blue backpack with one strap I would have a small cap with jeans and a green shirt with a black hoody and his name would be Austin and he would carry a little pocket knife with him but only when he is traveling he would sometimes get a little out of control but usually friendly he gets really hungry really easily. My character would sort of be like Bilbo and sort of like Golem. J.M

  10. 1.If I possessed the golden ring I would use it to help people in need and use it to help our planet anonymously. After I had used the ring I would destroy it. Some things are more trouble than they are worth.
2.The significance of the title of this chapter (out of the frying-pan into the fire) is that Bilbo had just escaped from one horrible place ( in the mountain/ the frying pan) and thought that he was safe but really he had just entered another danger ( the fire).
3.The ring would not protect Bilbo from the wolves because the wolves have very could hear and a great sense of smell so the wolves could find Bilbo easily.
4.A dwarf that Bilbo was traveling with helped Bilbo into the tree.
5.My character would be a lady. Her name would be Aravis and she would be someone who takes care of passers for a bit until they are ready to go. She would take Bilbo and the dwarfs for a little while and she would provide them with food and strong ponies to carry their food and some dry sweaters. She would be a kind, ambitious women, who is always quick to jump for help, and is very skilled and helpful. Aravis talks a bit too much, and feels that if she does not fulfill her guests’ wishes then she will have failed and must punish herself. Aravis is a bit stubborn when she doesn’t get enough sleep.

  11. I would use the power of the golden ring for playing games and to play jokes.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire means getting out of trouble then getting into another one.
The ring would not protect Bilbo from the wargs because wargs have a strong sense of smell.
Dory helped Bilbo escape into the tree.
My character would be Bilbo’s long lost cousin. His name would be Trouderloo and he would have a small bushy Green beard. Trouderloo would where a green tunic (that used to be a human’s) and he would were socks and sandals. Trouderloo would have really harry arms and feet. Trouderloo would have a miniature top hat with a silver stripe that says Trouderloo in bold letters on it. Often Trouderloo acted adventurous and ready for anything with his trusty unicorn and slingshot. Trouderloo is adventurous. I would include Trouderloo in the story when Bilbo and the dwarfs would enter the dragons cave and there would be no dragon, and Trouderloo would jump out behind a boulder and say boo. But the dragon would come back to the cave to sleep on his mountain of gold. But trouderloo’s unicorn would fight off the dragon.

    2. The significance of the chapter was when Bilbo was in golem’s cave that was when Bilbo could have got eaten was when he was in the frying pan and when he escaped into the forest he ran into a fire.

    4. The dwarf that saved Bilbo was named dory, he helped him get back in the tree.

    5. My guy would be 9ft tall and 600 pounds and have no weapon what so ever but the bad guys will run away because if they don’t he will sit on them. His name would be Sumo.

    5. My characters name is Envy, she is a not so kind type of girl. She is mostly to her self. She has a trusty horse named father. She is always wearing this miniskirt and a half tank top with no shoes just some soft fabric that is not covering her heel or toes. She wears on her hands gloves that don’t cover her fingers and thumb. She has green hair like palm tree in a way. And she has purple eyes that are a bit like cats.

    2. The significance of the title of this chapter (Chapter Six: Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire) is that when Bilbo went on the mountain it was the frying pan and then he went to the cave which he thought was safe but turns out there`s danger so the cave then would be fire.

He likes to talk about the mountains and how they formed because he’s 471 years old. He’s a happy Giant and fun to talk to but he’s also very territorial. He’d come in while the dwarfs and beorn. He’d be like beorn’s servant coming from the forest to give him dinner. Whenever Dan wouldn’t get what he wanted in returned he’d threaten to throw in the river.
