The 9 Lives of Montezuma...The Black Cat

In his sixth life, Montezuma was stalking a fledgling pigeon when he came across an intruder in his territory.

"This was a cat Montezuma had not met before and he would take his time before he attacked.  He watched the black cat move and noted the strength in his shoulders: he glared into its yellow eyes and probed for weakness but found none.  Montezuma...struck out across the black cat's nose.  But the black cat was young and knew only how to attack.  He sprang forward again...Montezuma knew now that he had underestimated his adversary."

1) Using two or more sentences tell what the author means when he says
"...he glared into its yellow eyes and probed for weakness but found none.
2) Write a description of the black cat in your own words using at least two sets of Quality Dual Adjectives to paint a picture in my mind of what the cat looks like and sounds like to you.  What do you imagine the cat is called?  Where did he come from?  Will he be back?

Do both questions in Microsoft Word.  Use all your COPS skills and include as many dressups as you need to make it interesting to read and descriptive.

  1. Q1: I think the author meant that Montezuma was staring in to the black cat’s eyes trying to find a weakness, or something that would help him beat the other cat.

Q2: My description of the black cat; He had a sleek midnight black coat. His powerful muscular shoulders were hunched as he walked. The seemed to have been stalking Montezuma and now was trying to keeping hidden so he could steal the prey but Montezuma saw him and he was ready…

  2. 1) I think he means that the cat he was facing was strong. He might also mean that Montezuma can’t win the fight.
    2) A powerful sleek, thin black cat. The cat had a high pitched, small voice for a battle cry. I think the cat might be named something along the lines of “Shadow’’ or “Night shade” and he came from a home quite a ways away or from the nice old man, Sid. I don’t think he will be back because someone might have found him, put him down, he could have gotten hit by a truck, or drowned but he might be back you never know…

  3. 1)What the author means when he says:
"...he glared into its yellow eyes and probed for weakness but found none.
Montezuma was scanning his foe for a weakness. After a though look he did not find any weaknesses but continued to fight anyway.

2)The young cat was clear, dark black. He had yellow eyes, a black nose and there was incredible strength in his shoulders. After the fight I would imagine he will not be back but if he is it will probably be out of pure, evil revenge. I think that the cat would be called something like Jack. I would imagine that he is an owned cat and that is why he is so strong and well nourished.

  4. I think the author is trying to say that the black cat has no weakness. And Montezuma is trying to find some. Cole

  5. I think the black cat is called shadow. The black cat probably came from some ones house. The cat is sleek like a seal and it has bright yellow eyes. This cat is cool. Cole

  6. 1.I think that the author is trying to say that the black cat will be strong and not have a weakness therefore Montezuma might lose the fight.
2.The shadowing and muscular black cat looked young and intelligent about fighting. You can hear the cat purring and gently stepping towards a tree. The cat’s name to me seems like it would be Shadow. He is probably a stray and is from the woods. If he wins the fight he will probably come back.

  7. 1)I think the author means yellow eyed is the color of a cat eye. The black cat was look like he had no weak spot so Montezuma had to fight the black cat.
2)The sleek black and muscular cat with one scrap on his nose, for it looked like the black cat had just fought for food of maybe for a mate. It looks like a black phantom move swiftly across the field. The cat appeared to have no home what so ever it just is in search for his next meal. I do not think he has a name or a family. Jake

  8. Q#1: Probing for weakness means that he looked at the black cat’s eyes to see if any slight emotions could show him he was winning, but surprisingly the black cat’s emotions were not it’s weakness.
Q#2: The black cat was a very interesting cat. She has to sparkling yet blistering yellow eyes. She is a young cat that is best at offense rather than defense. Her attack is so powerful she can harm Monte Zuma. She probably comes from a dangerous and mysterious home. I think a forest fire may have made her flee her home or something. I think her name is Mystica because even though her young age, she still seems powerful and mysterious. I believe she will be back and will take away Monte Zuma’s last life.

  9. 1) the author means that montezuma couldn't find the weakness to the black cat.
    2) the black cat had massive colorful bright yellow eyes .He had sturdy shoulders and he had blood gushing from his nose because Montezuma had just slashed his claw adross the black cats face. I do not think the black cat will be back because of what Montezuma did to him. I think that hte black cat could have come from another farmer. I imagine the cat would be called warrior. Carly

  10. 1) I think that the author means by ‘’he looked into the black cats eyes’’ is that there may be a weakness if the cat flinched or looked nervous around his weakness that the cat showed no weakness.
    2) The black cat showed no fear he was young and dangerous but was slightly talented in fighting himself. Even though he was athletic, he was also frightened. He saw that his opponent was tough but he himself looked fierce. The black cat was not the patient type but he knew how to attack, but did not teach himself to defend himself he attacked but missed. His opponent attacked and hit. And the black cat went back at him he missed and got hit again and ran off to where he came out off.

  11. 1. I think the author means that Montezuma is trying to find something that will give him the upper hand if he is going fight the cat. He is trying to find a weakness that could help him win but he didn’t find any.

    2. My description of the other cat would be, the cat has bright, yellow eyes and is very alert he is not scared of Montezuma. He has dark, black fur and strong shoulders, He is probably from the woods I’m guessing his name would be midnight because of his dark fur. If he wins the fight I think he will come back and claim the farmyard as his.

  12. 1)The author means that sometimes if you look deep into someone’s eyes and look hard enough you might find what they are feeling. What he means is Monte is trying to find a way to get around the black cat, and is looking to see where his weakness is.
2)I think that the strong, velvety black cat’s name is Fighter, because he can fight well, and doesn’t back away unless he has to. I think that the Fighter is from a nice large house with a family in a forest by a creek with lots of wild game to hunt. I don’t think that Fighter will come back because he was so horribly hurt that he wouldn’t dare face the sneaky, fierce Montezuma. Catherine

  13. 1) When I read the paragraph I thought the author was saying that Montezuma was glaring into his eyes to find his weakness, but the back cat didn’t have one. He is also kind of has given a description.
    2) I think … the cat was a deep, dark black with piercing yellow eyes. It had huge, muscular shoulders. I think he is a stray and doesn’t have a home. I think he calls himself midnight. He won’t come back. Anika.

  14. 1) He looked in his eyes to find the weakness, but there was no weakness that he could find, so he tried to find it by combat.
    2) The black cat has shruged, ready for combat shoulders, and his eyes looked fierce and bright gold. It was pitch black and I think it might be the she cat. Montezuma though did not recognize her, for he had never seen her because the last time he was around he was blind and very young. I think her name is Blackout. I also think she went looking for a tom cat and was stolen by Sid and that was Sids first warning and the she cat had just got back. Branden

  15. 1.I think that the author is trying to tell us that that cat will be back for revenge I also think that Montezuma will lose their next fight because the cat sounds really mad when he lost the fight.
2.The cat has bright yellow eyes that look sharp. He has dark black fur that looks silky and smooth. He is very young and is great at fighting. His name would probably be Nightmare. Martin

  16. 1.)The author is trying to tell you that Montezuma is looking in the black cat’s eyes to find out what its weaknesses are but found none, so Montezuma will have to fight back with lots of power if he doesn’t wants to lose the fight.
2.)The black cat had glowing yellow eyes and soft, silky black fur and the black cat also seemed very strong and would probably injure Montezuma very badly if he didn’t win the fight. I would probably call the cat something like Shadow.
    Rebecca.

  17. 1. I think the author is trying to tell us that he tried to find his weakness but could not find any because he had ear that was torn and he properly did not have any strength. And I also think that the author is trying to say that the next time he fights he is going to lose.
    2. He had black fur looked shiny and smooth. He was young but really strong and healthy. And the yellow eyes looked really powerful. I think he came from a forest and he is going to come back and help Montezuma. I think I would name him Darkness

  18. 1)I think the author means that maybe it’s a different kind of cat and that maybe the yellow in his eyes kind of meant stay away or I’m dangerous, because he has no fear and most animals have fears.

2)I think that the strong, furious black cats name is killer. I think the black cat came from a dark spot in the forest because something happened when he was young and so he has lived in the dark ever since, that is why he has come back for revenge.

  19. 1. What I think the author means is that Montezuma is try to find weakness in the black cats eyes to see if It will be easy to fight the black cat but when he was trying to find weakness he could not find any.
    2. What I think the black cat looks like is he has round bright yellow eyes and he has really black dark fur and I think he is very young and he is not scared of Montezuma because he is just a young cat. i was thinking the black cat came from the woods? I think his name could be shadow because his fur looks shadowy and i dont think that the black cat would ever come back because he was terribly hurt. Jadenn

  20. 1) The author means that sometimes if you look deep into someone’s something is going to happen and it might be how someone is feeling.
    2) I think the black cat is a large furry cat and strong and the black cats name is soldier. I think the cat came from a big forest and he was the only cat there. He will come back and fight Montezuma and he will never come back again to fight Montezuma. The cat sounds like a hungry wolf.

  21. 1) I think the author is saying there is no fear in the cat’s eyes. I also think Montezuma is waiting to see where the cat is going to attack.
    2) I think the silky tar color cat is going to be back in a little while and Montezuma will see his silky tar color fur and try to attack it again and loses. I think his name should be midnight.

  22. 1) I think that Montezuma is like all other cats. It’s just that he is more fears or more protective
    2) The little black cat in the book has yellow eyes, he’s black and a black nose. He is very strong in his arms. I think he should be owned because how strong he was. I imagine that he would be back for his revenge. I think that he would be called Jake because how strong and how small he is. He must sound annoying with all that blood coming down his face. Rember I’m just guessing. kobe

  23. 1) I think the author means Montezuma was looking for fear in the cat’s eyes. I also think Monty was looking for weakness, areas that are not the black cat’s good areas.
    2) I think the black cat is agile, sneaky and very young. I also think the black cat is a male, harsh cat. I think the cat’s name is shadow. He might come from the deep forest, places Monte has not been before. Rielle

  24. 1) I think the author is trying to get the reader to think that the other cat is so strong and has no weaknesses. Almost that the author is going to make the other cat with no weaknesses win.
    2) My description of the other cat would be ferocious, large cat and it’s also is mean, naughty. The cat probably looks like a black cat and really muscular. The cat maybe would sound like sneaky and just pounce at Montezuma. He might of came from somewhere he got bullied. A good name would be mean old John.

  25. 1) I think the other means Montezuma is looking for a weakness in his eyes so he can attack. After he attacked he would probably scare the tomcat away.
    2) I think the black cat looks muscular and strong a scare streaked across his fore head. He was quiet young although he only know how to attack. He did have pretty good speed and balance to. Jacob

  26. 1. I think that the author meant when he glared into its yellow eyes and probed for weakness but found none I think he meant he was looking to see if the other cat had fear.

I really enjoyed reading your post. You have used very descriptive words to describe the black cat. What I think you might be able to add next time would be to put why you think the cat might be named that. I know why you would name it that but it would be a good thing to add.

  30. 1) The author means by “glared into its yellow eyes and probed for weakness but found nothing” was that maybe that black cat has no weakness it is not scared of anything of any type.
    2) The black cat looks like a silky, smooth, sparkly, sneaky and brave cat. The cat always looks like he is wondering about something strange he was always suspicious. The black cat is really talented in fighting it looks at this age. He sounds like he is squealing all the time. I think the cats name should be Dipsy because it kind of is like a fighting name and I think he is from Switzerland and I think that we will not return because he was injured. Simmy.

  31. I disagree with you I think the cat had diamond eyes and I do not think he had a name. I just think he is a young cat and he under estimated monte power, speed and stamina and lost the fight. This is Jadenn Jenson’s post. Jake

    2) The black cat was very sneaky it had a mind of its own it was cat was sleek, mild and was also suspicious and the cat may have been happy and then when the owners left him. His name would probably be Dusk. Halle

  39. Ryan I agree with your theory of she will take away Monte Zuma last life. I think that is a wise statement, and I also agree about he is better at offence then defense and that Monte Zuma discovers later. 40. Lindsey, I disagree with your comment because I was confused when you said he was a strong, furious black cat because why would he be furious he has not only never met Montezuma but he has never approached or fought him before so really what is there to be furious about. Other than that I thought it was a very good response and I liked how you said he lives in a dark spot of the forest because something happened when he was younger and he cannot go back to wherever he was from, It was very descriptive.
