Born To Run: Craig's Side of the Story

In the last chapter, Craig had Alfie "taken away" because he came up lame in a race and would never be able to run competitatively again.  Craig has always said that the greyhounds are not pets; they are his working dogs.  Becky was horrified when she saw what actually happened to Alfie and all the previous dogs that could no longer run.

1. I'm going to ask you to do something hard!  Defend some of Craig's rules: what possible reasons could Craig have for
  • not allowing the dogs in the house
  • not allowing Becky or anyone coddle the dogs
  • not keeping the dogs around after they are no longer able to race
2. What alternatives could Craig have chosen for his dogs, once they can no longer run?

  1. 1. Not allowing the dogs in the house:
Because they might break something valuable, poke a hole in something, ext.
Not allowing Becky or anyone coddle the dogs:
Because they might not do as well in races and be to focused on that to focus on what’s going on and the race.
Not keeping the dogs around after they are no longer able to race:
Because there is the cost of kennel space, food, water, ext. and having all those extra dogs costs a lot.
    2. Some alternatives could be that he could actually send them to a nice home, or sell them to make some extra money, maybe even give them to a shelter or pound.

  2. 1.a) Craig doesn’t allow the dogs in the house because he believes that dogs that are treated as pets don’t run as fast.
    b) Craig doesn’t want anyone to coddle the dogs because (again) he thinks that dogs that are loved and treated as pets don’t do as well in races.
    c) Craig doesn’t want to keep the dogs after they can’t race because they still have to be fed and looked after and if they are not winning and making money, why pay to keep them?

    2. Some alternatives Craig could have chosen for the dogs could be:
    • Sending them to a shelter
    • Throwing them on the street
    • Leaving them at the race track
    • Taking them around the town asking if anyone wants a dog who can’t run.

  3. 1) Craig only wants the dogs to be racing dogs and he doesn’t want Becky or Becky’s mom to be friendly with dogs because they could mess up the racing for the dogs.
    2) Craig could have put the dogs up for adoption instead of giving the dogs to the land rover. Carly

  4. 1. I think the reason that Craig doesn’t want the dogs in the house is because maybe he thinks they’ll get too used to being inside and not want to go back out to the kennel.

    2. I think Craig doesn’t want anyone to coddle the dogs because they might get too used to being house pets and they will not want to race anymore.

    3. The reason I think Craig doesn’t keep the dogs after they have finished racing is because when they don’t race he doesn’t make money of them so there is no reason to keep them anymore.

  5. 1 I think one of the reasons that Craig doesn’t want the dogs in the house is because Craig might think the dogs are used to be running around outside and there not pets.
2 I think Craig doesn’t want anyone to coddle the dogs because there not to be in the house or treated like pets.
3 I think Craig means that when the dogs are no longer to race they will be put down or go to a better home.Jadenn

  6.  Craig doesn’t let the dogs in the house because he doesn’t want to show that he doesn’t treat the dogs as pets and wants them out of his way.
 Craig doesn’t want anyone cuddling with the dogs because he thinks they are just sports equipment rather than living things.
 Craig only wants money, so he gets rid of the dogs so he doesn’t have to keep his spare time taking care of the dogs and he definitely doesn’t want to feel bad.
    2. Obviously he should have taken the dogs to new homes or let Becky take care of them

  7. 1) A) I think Craig think it is not good be nice to the dogs because if you are nice they will not work as hard as they could be working. B) If you coddle the dogs they will not leave your side and not race. C) If you let the dogs stay when they cannot run it will waste money to feed.2) He could give the dogs to a animal shelter Jake

  8. I think that Craig doesn’t want dogs in the house because he does not think of the greyhounds as pets. Craig doesn’t want anyone to coddle the dogs because he thinks that they won’t race that well. Craig doesn’t think of the dogs as pets. Cole

  9. 1. Well I think that Craig would let the dogs in because they will feel to sloppy to race and he will lose money.
    2. He could have sent them to a small place to murder them and bury them like the all the other dogs. Halle

  10. 1.Craig only wants the dogs for racing, so he doesn’t want Becky to get to close because he knows what happens, and he also knows that Becky will find out what happens. They are no pets they are money making machines once they stop making money they will die anyway because he will not feed them or give them water.
2.Some alternatives for Craig could be going into the city and sell them at a stand, get some friends and see if they want them, or the best let Becky keep her favorites. Branden

  11. 1) Not having dogs in the house because they can trace footprints.
    2) Not coddling the dogs because they will get loved to much and stop racing.
    3) Not keeping the dogs around after they are no longer able to race because they are gray hounds and they are meant for racing not loving.

  12. Q#1
a)He could not let them in the house because they could be very dirty and they could get attached to the dogs.
b)He wants them only to focus on racing and not get attached to people because they will eventually have to leave.
c)He doesn’t want dogs for pets he just wants to race them so that when they are not able to race he sends them away.
    Q#2
a)He could have kept them in the kennels and took care of them.
b)He could give them to a good family who wants one.
c)He could take them to be looked after until somebody adopts one.

  14. Craig probably doesn’t allow the dogs in the house because if they come in the house they might break things or wreck the furniture.

Craig doesn’t let Becky coddle the dogs because they might get used to being cared and treated so well that they will forget about running.

Craig doesn’t want the dogs around after they are not able to race because they will make him no money and Craig only cares about winning and money.
2.) Craig should’ve taken the dogs to a place where someone could’ve taken care of them or let Becky keep them because obviously she would of taken much better care of them then where they are now.

  15. I think that Craig doesn’t allow dogs in the house is because that if the dogs always lie down on the couch they will get to relaxed and won’t work as hard as they could.

Craig probably doesn’t allow people to coddle with dogs because the dogs might get to familiar with the people that are being over protective because they might not run as fast if the people that love him aren’t at the race watching.

I believe that Craig gets rid of the dogs because if they aren’t able to win money he might think there useless so that is why he just gets rid of them.

  16. I think Craig doesn’t allow dogs in the house because they might become house dogs instead of racing dogs. Craig doesn’t let people coddle the grey hounds because they might get to close to the person and might stop winning races because Becky for example would be too kind to them and they wouldn’t want to race for Craig, or anyone. She might spoil them, and they would eat too much and be too heavy to win races. The dogs wouldn’t earn Craig any money so they would not any use. It would be too much work to take care of dogs that don’t race and the dogs that do race.
Craig could have sent them to an animal shelter or he could have sent them to REAL loving proper homes that people would actually love the dogs and help them get exercise by taking them to a park instead of racing. Catherine

  17. 1.A good reason for not letting the dogs in the house is that the dogs could get all dirty because they run around the track or that the dogs could have fleas.
2.A good reason to not coddle with the dogs is that they are made to run and they should not get the chance to make friends with humans.
3.A good reason to get rid of the dogs when they can’t race anymore is that when the dogs aren’t good at racing you just have to give up on them because they’re not useful anymore.
Q#2 They could have been sold to people who want them.

  18. •Not allowing the dogs in the house.

Craig is not letting dogs in the house because he wants them to run faster and he thinks that if they don’t get to sit on cushions and the couch then they will run faster.

•Not allowing the dogs in the house.

Craig probably is thinking that the dogs will run faster if they aren’t loved to try to get loved…but Craig never gives it to them

•Not keeping the dogs around after they are no longer able to race.

Craig does this because he thinks that the dogs will take up to much time, space and effort. Too much time because he(Becky more like)would have to take care of them. Too much space cause he has to have them in the kennel were new younger dogs could go, and too much effort because again he(again, Becky more like) would have to take care of them.

•I think Craig dint want the dogs in the house because they might wreck the house.
•They might get too attached to the dogs.
    •They are Craig’s “work dogs.”

  20. One reason I think the dogs should not be in the house is there might be hair all over the house.

I think Craig does not want Becky to coddle the dogs because the dogs might start only caring about people and not about winning races.

I think Craig dose not want to keep the dogs after they stop winning because they are just making him buy for food for the dogs and it will just waste him money.

  21. I believe that Craig is right when he is say that no dogs are allowed in the house because as he said that they are his work dogs nothing else so by that point he is serious about it and what else do they do just make the house dirtier.
Craig probably doesn’t want anyone to cuddle with the dogs especially Becky because he doesn’t want the dogs to get all spoiled and not be able to run the races because all there going want is food and attention and for sure he doesn’t want anyone to show care for the dogs.
I believe that Craig has said why keep a dog when it is not able to run in one single race and why take care of it when it is not helping you in any type of work.Simmy

    2) Craig could of given the dogs to families instead of kill them.

  24. 1) I think Craig’s reason for not allowing the dogs in the house is because they may become more of a pet and not race as well.
    2) The reason I think know one is allowed to coddle the dogs is because they will become pets to the people.
    3) I think Craig doesn’t want the dogs after they can’t race because they don’t make him money anymore.

    2) Craig could have sent them to good homes where they are cared for (in a good way ). Rielle

  25. Defending Craig
•I think Craig doesn’t allow the dogs in the house because he feels they need
The fresh air and when they are outside they can run and practice running for their races. Also Craig probably won’t want to get to like them so much that when they cannot run he will want to keep them but when he gets new dogs that can run and he lets them in the house and gives them affection he will want to keep them to and then after a long time he will have so many dogs he will finally have to do something with them.

•I think when Craig says don’t coddle the dogs he means don’t give them lots of affection so they don’t feel they are home dogs, they feel like they are still racing dogs because when they are outside they have their fresh air and the wind in their face and they can run wherever whenever. If they are inside and they get love and affection they will feel special and get sweet and then that way they won’t race as well. That is why Craig says to keep the dogs outside.

•I think that Craig doesn’t like keeping the dogs after they can’t run because he doesn’t like pets or he doesn’t want any pets he could have had a bad experience with dogs as his pet.

  26. Craig does not allow dogs in the house because so if they come in the house they will come on the couch and eat everything that is not secure they can break something valuable, its mayhem trust me.
Craig does not allow coddling with the dogs because If they get to conferrable with anybody that it can effect there running.
Craig doesn’t like to keep the dogs after they can no longer run because they are not pets there working dogs.
Craig could have brought the dogs to the pound or sell them or even keep them.Kobe
