The Giver: How Does It End?

Re-read pp 174 to 179 in The Giver

The ending of the The Giver may be interpreted in two very different ways.

Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful that the Giver transmitted to him - as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow.

Or perhaps Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him.  Lois Lowry mentioned both possibilities but would not choose one as correct.

Choose the ending that you believe, and tell in your own words what happened.
  1. Find 3 pieces of EVIDENCE from the book to support your idea of what happened from the last chapter.
  2. Include a quote straight from the book as PART of your evidence.  Give the page number of the quote.
  3. What will happen to The Giver? The Community? Jonas and Gabriel now?
  4. What are some memories (plural) that you have you would give to someone you care about?
Do this is MS WORD.  Use WORD TALK to proof read your answer BEFORE you post it.

  1. I think that he was just remembering the last of his great memories as he froze to death because,
    1. He was starving and had barley eating in days
    2. What are the chances that at the bottom of the hill there would be a house with a bunch of people that for some reason knew him waiting?
    3. He couldn’t hear anything until he was almost at the “house”.
And now my quote, “For a moment he thought how easy it would be to drop beside it himself, to let himself and Gabriel slide into the softness of snow, the darkness of night, the warm comfort of sleep.” And he probably did end up doing so. I think that The Giver will just leave all of the other people in the community to learn their lesson of relying on other people to hold on to everything for them. Then I think that the community will eventually plead The Giver to take the memories back and he will after a while and wait for the little 5 girl to grow up to be a 12 and she will be the next to be chosen to be a Receiver of Memory because she has the light coloured eyes like Jonas and Gabriel who could receive memories.

  2. I chose this answer:
Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful that the Giver transmitted to him - as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow.
    1. My evidence is
“He got off and let it drop sideways into the snow. For a moment he thought of how easy it would be to drop beside it himself, to let himself and Gabriel slid into the softness of snow, the darkness of night, the warm comfort of sleep.”
    Those are signs of hypothermia.
“; he was impeded by the snow and his own lack of strength.”
You need strength and energy to keep warm and without heat you can’t get very far in the snow without hypothermia.
“Using the final strength, and a special knowledge that was deep inside hi, Jonas found the sled and hugged Gabe close. The hill was steep but the snow was powdery and soft, and he knew that this time there would be no ice, no fall, no pain. Inside his freezing body, his heart surged with hope.”
He doesn’t have much strength, his freezing body those can’t be good in the cold.
    One more is:
    “Jonas felt himself losing consciousness…”
He is having hypothermia… you can tell.
    2. For the last two pieces pg. 179
    3. I think the giver will try to stop chaos in the community and then return to his home. The community will probably start to adjust to having the memories and learn to live with them. Jonas and Gabriel will probably end up dying from hypothermia.
    4. Some memories I would give to someone I care about are memories of building snow forts, going out into the ocean and listening to a parakeet saying her name to you.

  3. The giver is a very old man he had been the giver for very long now and he is very wise well in the book at least. The giver said to Jonas the else were is there the community knows it the giver knows it JONAS KNOWS that it’s there. They have already reached where they wanted to go… elsewhere. I think they didn’t die I think they reached their destination (P180). The giver is can hear Jonas having the life that he deserved. The community is different very different first of all they change sameness they have colors they have the best of all… love.

  4. What I think happens in the end is: The Giver told Fiona and Asher the truth. Fiona and Asher went in one of the search planes, they pointed out the house, and they thought it was Jonas inside. It was not Jonas, but they could sense he would come. They settled in. When Jonas arrived they did not go back to the community. They turned into young adults, as they raised Gabe. Some evidence of my prediction is he could see lights, the Giver also had the items from the memories he gave them the sled that was in the memory and echo was their voices. The Giver since Jonas had left he lived a regular life. I would give my Christmas and other holiday memories to my brother. Branden

  5. Think that what Jonas was doing was literal and happening. For one the book told us that Jonas fell but got up and it never motioned him falling back down Here is my quote for evidence: his spirits soared and strength lifted with the momentary warmth and he stood.

Two Gabe was with him and if he had been experiencing memories Gabe would not have been with him and three if he had been experiencing memories he would not have heard music because he had no memories of music.

I think the Giver was frits worried that Jonas had forgotten then scared he had been caught and then in the morning just plain terrified. I think the community was worried because they knew they would get the memories and probably scared because they knew that Jonas had a lot of memories so that would mean a lot of memories coming back.

Some memories I would give to someone I cared about would be memories of playing in the summer, laughing with my friends, and memories of having fun.

  6. I think that Jonas dies because in the book he was experiencing two memories, so I think that he will see all his memories just like his life is flashing before his eyes before he dies. I think Gabriel realizes Jonas is dead so he starts crying and somebody comes to help him. Then they keep Gabriel and give him a better life rather than the dull sameness that he had back home. I think this because in the book Jonas saves Gabriel from being released so I don’t think he will die. Also it said that the music he heard might have been an echo, but Jonas said that The Giver didn’t have to give him the memories of music so it might have been real. I would have given someone I cared about the memories of the warm sunshine (Not sunburn!) falling down on them. Also I would give them the memory of the Christmas where there was love overflowing in the room and their faces lit up when they saw their presents.

  7. I agree with the first idea of Jonas and Gabriel freezing to death because on page 176 Jonas’s thought was how easy it would be for him and Gabriel to just slide into the snow and sleep and that is a sign of hypothermia which can lead to death. On page 178 another reason might be when Jonas was standing at the top of the hill he felt happy and was recalling happy memories, then a sled appeared and he began to ride on it, and after that he herd music and he saw lights and houses with families in them waiting for him and Gabriel but maybe he was just remembering all the memory that he had. A last reason is I think maybe it was just so cold and he hadn’t eaten in a long time so he probably did end up falling asleep in the snow. A quote would be ‘’Jonas found the sled that was waiting for him at the top of the hill’’ but really, sleds don’t just appear out of nowhere so I think he was just hallucinating. I think the giver maybe just let the people have the memoires and that might change their mind about the whole release thing. I would give a memory of a really happy time and that would remind the person of that and they would be happy as well.

  8. 1.I think Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him. 2. My evidence from the book to support your idea of what happened from the last chapter is that at the end it said that Jonas fell and grab the rope then Jonas slide down the hill. The community get wisdom and love pan and colors back they will let hills and snow sunshine and rain back to the giver will aply for relies. Jonas and Gabriel will have a fun colorful life. I would give them the memorie of snow sunshine if they did not know about it. BEN

  9. I think since he numbly his hands fumbled for the rope (179) I think by the time he got down the hill there was only one alive. The one that lived was Gabe, then they took Gab inside and gab lived with some new parents that took good care of him for the rest of his life. The community went back to normal and slowly cared less. They got a new receiver for the community and everything was the same again.

  10. I think Jonas and Gabe hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow and died, because
    • He had not eaten for days.
    • He had not sleep for days.
    • And he wanted to lay down in the snow.
Here is my evidences “for a moment he thought how easy it would be to drop beside it himself, to let him and Gabriel slide into the softness of snow, the darkness of the night, and the warmth and comfort of sleep. Pg.176
The Giver will let all the memories out and help the community with the problem and the community will have all the memories and will be under control but Jonas and Gabe will be died.
Some memories that I would share with my loved would be scuba diving, climbing up the Eiffel tower and flying in a small airplane.Jake

  11. #1 and 2: I think that Jonas died a happy death. I think he died because in the Giver it says: and he could barely move his freezing tired legs. Page # 178. And after that he starts remembering happy memories such as his family and Asher and Fiona. Jonas and Gabriel were so cold that they both had hypothermia and gently faded away. It also says that Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and I think that before he truly leaves the earth that he remembers the happy things that he experienced.
#3: I think that what will happen to the Giver and the community is that there would be too many memories to find away to get rid of, so the community was forced to keep the memories. The Giver will help the community learn how to handle the memories, and the Giver will not apply for release, but will die a natural death. As for Jonas and Gabriel I think that the community will always remember them and that after they die they are happy to be warm again, and get to be with people of the past.
#4: some of the memories that I would give to someone I care about would be: A fun memory: Tubing with my cousins and feeling the joy of the ride. Getting flipped off was exiting too! A sad memory: When I found out about someone in my family that had died. A happy memory: When I made my first friend here in Nanaimo! Catherine

  12. I think that Jonas and Gabriel are going into hypothermia. Here is my first piece of evidence: he got of the bicycle and let it sideways into the snow. For a moment he thought how easy it would be to drop beside it himself, to let himself and Gabriel slide into the softness of the snow, the darkness of the night, the warm comfort of sleep. Page 175. But his mind was alert now. Warming himself ever so briefly had shaken away the lethargy and resignation and restored his will to survive. He began to walk faster on feet that he could no longer feel. But the hill was treacherously steep; he was impeded by snow and his own lack of strength. He didn’t make it very far before he stumbled and fell forward. Page 176. Downward, downward, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him’ and that they were waiting, too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing. Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo. Page 178-179. I think the giver will be soon released since he is getting older and I think the community will get all the memories and I think Jonas and Gabriel passed away of hypothermia. Memories I would give to someone I care about would be memories of joy being together with your family and the memories of happiness in your life. I would give the memory of love.

  14. I think Jonas was only remembering the Christmas memory and was going to die because: Jonas and Gabriel were freezing to death and were starving. My quote is Jonas thought for a moment how easy it would be to drop beside it himself, to let him and Gabriel slide into the softness of snow the darkness of the night, the warm comfort of sleep. I think Gabriel will also die of hypothermia just like Jonas. I think the giver will eventually get released and the community will find out about all the memories. Some memories I would share would be going to the beach and spending time with family and friends.

  15. I think that Jonas died because he and Gabriel were extremely hungry since they left their community. They also were riding on the sled downhill and that’s a part of his memories. I think Jonas was having hypothermia and maybe he was experiencing all his memories before he died. I think that the giver will release himself because he wanted to be with his daughter Rosemary. Now for my quote. “It became a struggle to ride the bicycle as Jonas weakened from lack of food and realized at the same time that he was encountering something he had for a long time yearned to see: hills.” I would give some memories about friendship and happiness to someone I cared about.

  16. I think that Jonas and Gabriel didn’t survive and died of hypothermia and Jonas was just recalling his memories back from the giver. Jonas and Gabriel wanted to go to sleep as in die. Cole

  17. One evidence is that Jonas had made the wrong choice 174. Jonas and Gabe thought it would be easy to just slide in the snow and that would cause hypothermia 176. And Jonas felt more and more certain of himself of what destination lay ahead of hem 175. And when Jonas was at the top of the hill he saw the red sled appear and then he rode it and saw family’s in windows and that maybe someone was waiting for them at the bottom of the hill. What I think is going to happen to the giver is that he is going to have a rough time that Jonas is not there anymore and that the community is going to ciaos because Jonas was always there for everybody. If I were the giver memories I would give to someone I care about would happiness with everybody and memories of being with your family and memories of to care about your family. Jadenn

  18. I think that he is dead because Jonas and Gabriel were hungry and cold a terribly sick. Jonas had paddle the bike with his numb, exhausted legs. Jonas and Gabriel only had a little bit of warmth left in their body.
This is my evidence, “A moment he thought how easy it would be to drop beside it himself, to let himself and Gabriel slide in to the softness of snow, the darkness of night, the warmth comfort sleep.”
The community will search for Jonas or they will just forget him because in their country there is no love. The giver will go back with his own family and daughter Rosemary because he has finished his job as a receiver of memory. Jonas and Gabriel will just die because of hypothermia.\

  19. Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful that the Giver transmitted to him - as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow.
I think from my point of view that Jonas did die from hypothermia and hallucinating from the snow because in the book it said on page 175 “Yet he felt it: felt that Elsewhere was not far away. But he had little hope left that he would be able to reach it. Maybe he meant that he had very less hope to reach his destination. So from my point of view he has just mixed his memories up to make one sad ending. I think the community and the Giver is going to miss Jonas because Jonas had learned so much information from the Giver that he could keep forever and those were his good memories and that is what made him wise as the receiver. As I said I think Jonas has died but I think that Gabriel is still alive maybe she called for help when she found out Jonas was dead and then maybe she got a new life not as dull as her other one. If I had to give memories I would give them to the people I trust and I would give memories like good things to spread joy and make everyone happy. Simmy.

  20. Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful that the Giver transmitted to him - as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow. My three pieces of evidence are ...
    1. Gabriel fell into the softness of the snow, the darkness of the night, the warm comfort of sleep.
    2. For a moment he though how easy it would be to drop beside it himself
    3. Could he hold on to a last bit of warmth? Did he still have the strength to give? Will Gabriel still receive? Page 176
    4. I think that Jonas and Gabriel were in hypothermia shock. Then Jonas was recalling things for his memories. I think that community will have to bare the same thing that happened to rosemary when all of the memories come back to them, and the giver said that he wanted to spend some more time with his daughter.
    5. One memory that I would like to would be sharing to with your family and happiness

  21. Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful that the Giver transmitted to him - as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow.
I think that in my point of view that Gabriel and Jonas died from hypothermia and also hallucinating from the snow (Pg175) “Yet he felt it: felt that elsewhere was not far away.” But he had little hope left that he would be able to reach it. I think that it means Jonas and Gabriel did reach the “elsewhere” but right when they got there they died from hypothermia. I think that the Giver and the community will miss Jonas because they will have to suffer the good and bad memories. I think that the Giver also had to suffer the memories because he gave Jonas a lot of them so he had to feel the pain to. If I had to give away memories I would give them to people I trust and not to people that tell everyone what there up to. I would give away memories that showed what the present was like and happy memories about people all over the world.

  22. I think what happened was real and not a memory because….
    1. He woke up at night and left his house. He was gone for many days. And when he wook up from sleep he was still outside.
    2. Jonas lay awake, tortured by hunger. And if he was in hunger he would probably not be a dream. That page is on page 173.
    3. The Giver would probably be fine because he knew about the plan but the community might be a little scared but they would probably make the right choice and Jonas and Gabriel would get cold but Jonas would help Gabriel and the y would get though the storm.
    4. I had a memory of when I built my first snowman when I was about 2 and a half. J.M

  23. I chose the first one where Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful memories that the Giver transmitted to him while he is freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow. My three pieces of evidence are…

    1) Jonas felt more and more certain that the destination lay ahead of him.
    2) For a moment he thought how easy it would be to drop down in the snow, to let him and Gabriel slide into the softness of the snow. P 176
    3) But he began, suddenly, to feel happy. He began to recall happy times. He remembered his parents and his friends Asher and Fiona. He remembered the giver. Memories of Joy flooded through him suddenly He reached the place where the hill crested and he could see the sled beneath him.
What I think will happen to the giver is he will probably come eventually to try and find Jonas. I think the community will become chaotic with all the memories. Jonas and Gabe will hopefully find shelter and survive.
Some memories I would give to someone are when I am on a rollercoaster or a at the fair ore somewhere exciting not at war.

  24. #1-2I think Jonas died. I think Jonas died because in the Giver it says his numb exhausted legs but the bicycle stopped it would not move pg #176.Also it says Jonas felt himself losing consciousness pg #179. And it says inside his freezing body, his heart surged with hope. I think that Jonas had hypothermia because he always wanted to go to sleep.
#3 I Think the giver will return home and he won’t be the giver any more he will just be a normal person in the community. I think the community will receive all the memories that the giver gave Jonas and everything will change and everyone will be different because they received the memories and everyone will have different opinions. I think Gabe will die from hunger and hypothermia just like Jonas.
#4 I would give someone a memory that it was my first time skating on the ice. Also I would like to give someone a memory of the first time I saw snow because I had never seen snow before. Also I would like to give someone memories when I was swimming at Sport Lake in the summer.

  25. I think that Jonas dies but Gabriel lives and people find him. 1) It seems as some the happy memories are coming back to Jonas when he was dying; although he had only heard about music he receives quite well maybe it was people who were died as he was entering the heavens. 2) Jonas felt himself losing consciousness, I suppose he was dying or remembering his favourite memories coming back to him before he lost all of them. 3) He could see the lights page 179. My quote is: but perhaps it was only an echo. I think the giver helps the community then he asks for release himself or he dies because he says he wants to be with his daughter “Rosemary.” If I was going to give a few memories they would be: a nice sunny day in an Australian park on a zip line and thunder storm with bright purples in Australia. Anika.

  26. I think that Jonas did not die, and he came and saw love and died many years later.
    Some evidence includes
-For the first time he heard something he knew to be music.
-He was aware that they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too for the, baby.
    - The Giver believed there was elsewhere.
I think Jonas and Gabriel went back to the original community with the memories back, the evidence is that the Giver said he would help them get the memories back. The Giver also said that the memories were a long time ago (possibly in their community?). The music was the Giver’s ability to hear beyond coming to everyone in the community. The Giver (possibly) put the sled there because if Jonas were to die, he would have had the sled ride finally.
Some memories I would like to share are those of the camping programs that I went to when I was little and eventually took my friends to them, Going on the giant waterslide, and going to DisneyWorld.

  27. I think Jonas really did come to a place where color still was. Some evidence is the fact Jonas knew he was almost there, one quote from Jonas is ”We’re almost there, Gabriel”pp178. Another reason is Jonas was speeding through the snow while holding Gabe. You can’t do that in an echo. I think Jonas and Gabriel will live with the family in the snow. As for the community, I think the Elders will finally step out of sameness. The Giver ? Well, I think he will Reiter to the house of the old, after that, he will finally be able to see his daughter again. Some memories I would Give to a special friend would be : my first Disney ride, the day I wrote my first song(not real song), my first dance show.

  28. I think that Jonas was actually hearing music and, with his special vision seeing the houses once he got off the sleigh.
    1. The first piece of evidence is that Jonas felt certain that elsewhere was over the peak. My second piece of evidence is when he felt a little bit of heat he thought he was there. My third piece of evidence is when Jonas was at the top of the hill he saw houses and thought he was there.
    2. A quote that I give is” I remember this place Gabe.”The # of the page is 178.
    3. I think what will happen to the giver is that he will give all the memories to Jonas and then I think he may die. I think the community will be trying to find Jonas and every one will get worried. Now that Jonas and Gabriel will live now in the place at the bottom of the hill. With Jonas and all his memories he and Gabriel will remember the memories that the giver gave him and they will dream the memories and imagine that there is a whole entire city they can live in.
    4. Some memories are when me my brother and my sister in Disneyland when we were going on a roller coaster and seeing the look on my brother and sisters face made me happy. Another memory is when me and my dad went to hockey and he was cheering me on made me happy also. The last one I will share is me and my mom went Christmas shopping made me happy too. One of the sad memories I have is that when my pet bunny Benjerman passed away made me sad I still don’t like talking about that memory. Another sad memory that happened was when we were going to Mt. Washington but never got to go there.
